Alice Zuberg or Alice Synthesis Thirty?

Alice with an eyepatch over her right eye and Kirito beside her; she is feeding him soup

Alice is one of the main characters and protagonists of Sword Art Online: Alicization and Sword Art Online: Alicization - War of Underworld. Formerly Alice Zuberg, she was named Alice Synthesis Thirty after being turned into an Integrity Knight by the Pontifex. Her hometown is Rulid Village, where she grew up with Eugeo and Kirito. Although she cannot access these childhood memories, Alice seeks to one day return her body to who she once was: Alice Zuberg, a kind-hearted girl studying the Sacred Arts in her tiny mountain village.

In Episode 1 of Sword Art Online: Alicization - War of Underworld, Alice can be seen taking care of Kirito after he has been left in a state of dependence. He cannot speak and has lost his self-image of himself. Even though Kirito can barely communicate, he helps Alice find her way. She is torn between fighting or staying away from the action, which is representative of her inner conflict between being her own person or restoring her past life.

Alice holds back from being herself because she feels she must keep her body safe until she can regain the memories of Alice Zuberg. She does not show her real feelings to Kirito, which she thinks is the reason she cannot get through to him while he is left in his fragile state. After defeating the Pontifex and realizing the truth about her life, Alice questions what she is truly fighting for as a knight. She is shunned by the villagers in her hometown until they discover she is an Integrity Knight. She has a harder time protecting people that are unkind and ungrateful, which she realizes after some villagers take advantage of Kirito. After spending six months away from the battlefield, as the rest of the Integrity Knights prepare soldiers for battle with the Dark Territory, Alice lives a peaceful life caring for Kirito and bonding with her sister, Selka. When battle with the mountain goblins breaks out, however, she decides to fight. Even if she cannot remember her time in Rulid, it is still her home that she chooses to protect.

After defending Rulid and pushing back the goblins, Alice heads to the battlefield. When Asuna arrives in the Underworld to join the fight against the Dark Territory, she claims to be Kirito's girlfriend and lover from the real world. Alice is shocked and hurt by this, since she has been caring for Kirito all this time. She does not know exactly if love is what she feels, but she is inspired by Kirito's strong will that he showed against the Pontifex and Axiom Church. In the end, she does get along with Asuna and the others from the real world.

Alice is divided by her past life and present self. She feels she cannot live her own life, although deep down she wants to. She comes to terms with the fact that her former life is gone, and she feels she should show her true nature of her soul. Despite her wiped memories, I feel Alice is still herself deep down. Even if she did regain those memories, she would still be strong and kind like she is now. Selka loves Alice despite the fact that Alice does not remember their time growing up together. Alice should still try to live her own life as the person she has become.
